The Lord Almighty
I don't update my blog nearly enough but I feel compelled to today. I have several things in my life that I'm not quite sure how to deal with, some I'm not even sure should be dealt with. Fortunately the Lord God in Heaven doesn't have my same limitations. I recently had the privilege of hearing Andrew Peterson in concert for the second time. In his new CD has written a song entitled Hosanna. He was gracious enough to explain how he came up with the title and shared the meaning of the word Hosanna.
Here are the references to the word Hosanna in the new testament. The word Hosanna is not used in the old testament.
- Matthew 21:9 KJV
And the multitudes that went before , and that followed , cried , saying , Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
- Matthew 21:15 KJV
And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did , and the children crying in the temple, and saying , Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased ,
- Mark 11:9 KJV
And they that went before , and they that followed , cried , saying , Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
- Mark 11:10 KJV
Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
- John 12:13 KJV
Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried , Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Andrew pointed out that the word has two different meanings.
The Hebrew meaning of the word is, "save now". While the greek word is a shout of adoration to the Messiah Jesus. Wikipedia says, "Overall, it seems that, "Hosanna," is a cry for salvation, while at the same time is a declaration of praise. Therefore, it may be derived that this plea for help is out of an agreeably positive connotation."
Hosanna is a cry for help and a recognition to the Lord and Savior who is the ultimate source of hope and grace.
So today I cry and sing Hosanna for I know my Lord is listening and will hear my cry, and the Holy Spirit will act as my intercessor. Amen.
